Users Discontinuing Slimming Injections Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research suggests that individuals who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals buying such treatments need to be aware of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.

Weighing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Doctors propose the mode of action of the injections explains the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

People who have discontinued the medication report a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you're instantly starving," recalled one woman.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among women than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers stress that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success relies on integrated behavioural management.
