A defense minister has confirmed that the MoD is currently examining the potential threats associated with Chinese vehicles, and staff have been advised to refrain from discussing secret information in all vehicles.
Safety Guidance for MoD Personnel
During a recent appearance on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed claims that MoD officials have been told not to discuss secret information while travelling in China-made vehicles.
He stated that the MoD is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, however stressed that safety is a issue in all contemporary cars.
We have a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
However regardless of if you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is to avoid connecting MoD devices into their vehicle, to avoid having conversations at a secret level in any kind of vehicle, because of the growing threats of surveillance that are present in every single vehicle, to restrict those secret conversations in protected areas. This is a prudent and reasonable thing for anyone worried about security.
After it was suggested that it would be prudent for the ministry to cease using all cars from China, Pollard replied: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the moment.”
Wider Security Context
The announcement follows claims from Norway and Denmark have warned the United Kingdom to the existence of dual-use kill switches in Chinese-made buses, which could enable the Chinese government to disable buses and cause chaos to public transit.
Furthermore, a Russian spy ship was reportedly shining lasers at RAF pilots, described as a “extremely risky” action by defence officials.
The broader security situation underscores the significance of strong measures and vigilance in all areas of official operations, including vehicle usage to discussions practices.
