A trader made nearly half a million dollars on the ouster of Nicolás Maduro shortly prior to it was publicly declared, raising questions about the possibility of profiting from inside knowledge of American actions. Sudden Shift in Predictions Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that the leader would be out of power by the close of the month rose in the hours before former President Trump stated on January 3rd that Maduro had been apprehended. One account, which registered on the site last month and made four bets, all on political events in Venezuela, made more than $nearly half a million from a modest bet of $32.5K. The identity is unknown. This unidentified trader had only a blockchain identifier for identification. Probability Spikes Before News Break Platform data shows that participants assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just under 7% in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd. However the market's assessment had jumped to eleven percent by late Friday night and surged in the early hours of the next day, suggesting a rapid movement in betting activity right before the social media post was made. "That trade has all the characteristics of a transaction based on inside information," said a financial reform advocate. A small number of other platform users also profited large payouts from similar wagers. Legal Questions Intensifies Elected officials are growing concerned. A bill presented on Monday aims to prohibit public officials from participating on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a wager. The Prediction Market Landscape Forecasting platforms have surged in popularity in the United States, with traders able to bet on everything from elections to politics. The industry were examined under the last presidential term. However it has found a more favorable environment during the present political climate. Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the securities markets, but there are fewer regulations in the event betting space. An official representative for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against insider trading of any form."
